The alphabet soup above is the list of file formats that the partially open-source Plex Media Center supports out of the box. And now content in any of the above formats will also be available on your iOS device (iPhone/ iPad/iPod) thanks to Plex’s new iOS app (will be available by September 1 on the App Store).

The app streams content that you have in your Plex Media Center over WiFi to your iOS device while also syncing your ratings, viewed status and more. For instance, you can stop watching a TV show midway on your Mac and pick it up after dinner in bed with your iPad; the show resumes exactly where you had left off. There’s also a neat little remote interface with gesture support to control your Plex Media Center on the desktop.

The Plex Media Center currently has content from 34+ channels including Apple Movie Trailers, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Joost, Major League Baseball, March Madness Basketball, National Public Radio, Netflix, Pandora Player, PBS, Pitchfork Media, Southpark, Spotify, SVT Play (Swedish TV), The Colbert Report, The Daily Kos, The Daily Show, The Onion News Network, The White House Updates, TV4 Play (Swedish TV4), YouTube and more.

Plex, a fork of the open-source Xbox Media Center(XBMC) project, is free and Mac-only. Besides XBMC, Plex is also seeing stiff competition from cross-platform Home Theater software Boxee along with their Boxee set-top Box.
